Medieval medicine

Dear cabbage diary,
Today i went to the middle ages, no i am certaintly not lying. I was sleepinng during the class and somehow i managed to get into the past. The wirdest thing was i was wearing a peasant clothes as if i've been living there for years. At first i didn't knew where i was, or who i was but than i saw a man with black robe. He had a big grin and had some wrinkles in his face, he was about mid fourties. I don't know why but i knew who he was, the "surgeon". I tried to talk to him saying " Hey, you ugly man look at meeee" but he ignored me as if i wasn't even there. Yes, at first i thought i was invisible, but no when i tried tosmack him he caught my arms and told me to get out. Thanks to my amazing persuasive skill i was able to persuade the ugly guy to tell me about the medieval medicine. So i asked him what did people believe caused sickness? Well, that was a stupid question. He simply told me that it was a punishment from the god. Geez, crazy right? When i asked what kind of remedies did he use to cure sickness, he smiled and said he uses leeches, earwax and other dangerous stuff which i can't remember. The most strangest and the most horrible thing i saw was that the ugly surgeon made a hole into a person head! He said it will help the patient to cure his madness and i was like what the hell? Anyway comparing to our health and medicine and the middle ages is such a waste of time. We use MEDICINE to clam people down not by making a hold in the head and also we use EYE DROPS for eye infection not blowing poo into our eyes. I don't know what happened next. After my last question i was knocked out by somebody in the back of the head (IT STILL HURTS) and i woke up and found my self in the middle of the classroom. Thank godness no one was there, but i really don't know what happened back there. Maybe it was a dream, a stupid dream.

crime and punishment

At november 10th 2050, profesor Noodle annouced, the different punishment that were given in the middle ages. He told the newsrobot what he had found about the middle ages.

" I, profesor Noodle had been researching about the crime and puishment in the meddile ages for 10 years.  I had found out the punishment we no longer use. The following are the examples, ripping out the teeth, boiling, beating and blinding. Nagging the husband, witchcraft and working on sundays or holyday were the crimes that must have killed thousand of people. This medieval people were cruel and had no repect for eachother, they were  especially cruel and violent to the ones who were poor and had no power. The most surprising about the  punishment in the middle ages is the following table how people were punished.
Tourture Device

How it was used
Brank
Covering people mouth
Pillory
Head and arm stuck in a wood
Drunkard Cloack
Barrel worn by drunken person
Stockade
Similar to pillory
Head crusher
Crushes the head
Foot board
Put mass around the waist while standing on top of the nail
Rack
Stretch the body with horses

There are many mystery about the middle ages that even i can't find it myself. My aim is to tell the citizen how people living in the middle ages and how violent it was. Thank You "

Catholic Church

 http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/71/Stift_melk_001_2004.jpg/300px-Stift_melk_001_2004.jpg

I am the pope, the richest and the most powerful person on the Roman Catholic Church.  The beliefs of the people were if they didn’t pray to zesus they would get punished. We have a special activity name indulgences, where the peasants pay and get their sins forgiven.  We also had a lot of power over the people. We controlled them by fear because they thought they would go to hell if they don’t obey our commands. Also, they had to pay one tenth of their money even though we are the richest because they thought they would get punished if they didn’t. So to explain it easier, the peasants were scared of us because we could punish them by the name of the zesus

Village life

Medieval peasant costume

Well hello, my filthy friends
by the time you're reading this i might be dead buried in cold mud mixed with animal dug but before i die i wanted to tell you a little story about the village life. So before i start the story, let be introduce myself, my name is John a handsome young peasant.
Did you always wanted to live in a place where everywhere smelled like animal dug and your own?
Well if you do, this is the right place to live in!
The village people are all weak and poor, we are controlled by our angry lord and always have to pay taxes to the manor house, which is such a stupid thing to do.
None of us could either read or write and also couldn't understand latin. We make our own house by twigs, straw and animal dug. how did we make a wall? we putted layers of animal dug in the frame made by twigs and put all of them together. Every families has about 6 to 10 people in each house and i have 7. I wake up at 6:00am and drink ale with a piece of bread. Do you know ale? its a alchol and it tastes filthy good! I eat it 5times a day including breakfast, lunch and dinner. I mostly farm everyday when my sons and daughters are playing madly. We mostly eat pttage, ale, bread, egg, fish and cheese for our meals. i wonder if they still eat it in the future. Well do they?
We peasants spend all of our lives in the smae village because we need to get permision from the lord and if we dare to run away we would be punished and don't ask me what happens to them because last time i went there and it was one of the scene i would remember for enternity. our clothes were always filthy and ripped from farming and we lived with our animals in one house. In winter when it is deadly cold, we would sew ourself to our underclothhes and cover our body wih fat from dead animals to keep us warm. Our lords always nags that we smell like dead meat and animal dug but why blamming us? Its the king's fault, for making us to pay taxes and live like wild pigs.
I hope you future peasants are not living an ugly life as we are now and the knights would be coming to kill you any moment. So good bye my friends and live well, that's all i can say

By John.

KNIGHTS

Medieval Knights

The Knights were violence man who fought for their lords. Not every one had the chance to become a knight except for the nobles. When a boy turns 7, they become a page boy in another noble family. Than at the age of 14, the ordinary lesson would end and the boy would learn how to use weapon, ride house, become fit and wrestle. The last stage, they needed to go through in the knighthood ceremony. They needed to bath to wash away his sins and dress in white to show he was pure. After that they were expected to spend 40 days serving in the army and finding more men to fight for the king.

To my dear King William,

To my dear King William,

I am writing to tell you that the enemies have been siege for 2 weeks. We’re starting to run out of food and the towers are starting to break apart. They threw hundreds of Greek fire, the dead bodies of our team mate, arrows rapidly plunging itself to out defenders chest. Also, I have a feeling they would try to dig underneath sooner or later when they get the chance.

I have decided that our first move would be throwing arrows and burning rocks. It would make the enemies harder to come close to our castle and would by us time to make another plan to defend our homes.

After that it will be necessary to fight them face to face with arrows and swords. We might lose some of our soldiers but we might be able to defeat the enemies if we put this all together. If this doesn’t work I would send one of our slaves as a decoy to distract the enemies.

I believe that we might have the chance to win. If the enemies try to dig under, they would drown and if they try to bring big machines, the water that surrounds our castle would stop them from attacking.

ATTACKING A CASTLE

Attacking a castle was not an easy job. People had to have enough soldiers to defeat the defenders.  They would decide to lay siege to the castle and literally sit down and wait until the defenders starved to death with the food supplies running out. The Lord would use some of the latest weapons such as battering rams, mangonels and trebuchet to get into the castle. They started to climb up the ladder, fire Greek fires and send dead bodies of the defender using a trebuchet. Not only that they used sappers where specialist soldiers could dig under a wall or tower and collapse it. The wooden cover, called a  tortoise was used to hide themselves from the defenders while in  progress.

CASTLES OVERTIME

In 1066, the first castles in England were building in order to send a message to the English that the Normans were there to stay. This helped William to take control of the English and made them serve him. The first castle, Motte and bailey were made from wood. It was quick and easy to build but could be burned or rot easily. Not only that, the motte would collapse under the weight of the castle. These castles were changed because it was easier to get attacked and too unreliable to retreat to and also because it was made out of wood.

The next castle that was built w ere the square keep castles. There were more spaces provided than the Motte and it was made for defense. The walls were 4 meters thick and definitely not luxurous. The square keep were strong, lasted longer and they were made tall so they could see enemies far off. Not only that the people who lived in the castle would not have a surprise attack from the enemies. The drawback of this stone castle was the fact it took longer time to build. The people who lived in the square keep castles starved to death when they were surrounded.

Shell keep castles, were made out of stone and were build on top of a motte. The round wall made it easier to organize a defence. Even though it was strong the defenders could see in all directions (shell keep castles were round) and they were easy to attack because of the weak gateway. The shell keep castle took a long time to build and the heavy stone on top of the motte could collapse.

Lastly, the concentric castle was the latest to be built. It was the biggest and the strongest building with thick walls that was sometimes 10ft thick. It was easy to organize a defence as castle was symmetrical and had high towers which defenders could fire down from. The concentric castle had two walls an inner and outer curtain wall making it hard to attack. It was extremely hard to build as was so expensive only the richest lord could afford to buy it.

In the end of the period castles became less defensive because England became less violent and some castles were made just for a safe home. Even though the castles were developed and changed, the one feature where all of the castles were made using rock stayed the same.

TOWN LIFE

The town life was always crowded with people. People making money from trading, not farming and they were free because they traded with the stuff they had brought. The smell was well horrible, there were rubbish everywhere, pigs and dogs walked around in the animal poo. There were people who came from miles to visit the town. The butcher’s shop was the smelliest of all the building as well as the tannery. The tanner was a man who turned animal skins into leather and kept them in a pit of animal poo water for months to make it soft.

FEUDAL SYSTEM

Feudal system is the land owner ship system. It began when William had a problem controlling the defeated English. He gave land to the lords and knights to be royal and obey his order and there was the Manor house where the Lord lived. This place was where the peasants have to pay their taxes to their lord. He made the peasant pay whenever they had a baby or got married! This made the peasants to be afraid of King William and obey his orders. Not only that the knights had to work for King William 40 days a year to repay the land they were given.
